Unexpected obstacles on the way home

When someone sets out full of enthusiasm to live abroad for some time, he will unlikely spare much thought for the far-off-day returning home. In a way, that is as is should be, as it’s more than enough to deal with the changes and finding one’s way around the new surroundings. Even so, it is important not to completely ignore the far-off time of return, because even that should be well prepared and brings some unexpected challenges.

The qualifying period

The qualifying period when starting a new job is something that most people have mixed feelings about at best. Still, the idea behind the concept is meant to be helpful to both sides. You get to know each other before fully committing yourself. Still, many employees when starting a new job get the feeling like someone is constantly watching over their shoulder and judging their every move. As a result, many desperately try to impress. However, simply trying to do good work and fit well into the team would be more useful.

Help! I am an Expat!

What is an “Expat”? The word is short for “Expatriate”, which designates a person, who for a while is living and working in a foreign country. In an increasingly global world, such temporary moves abroad are becoming more and more frequent, especially for management positions or specialist personnel. Definitely, such a stay can be an exciting experience for the whole family. Especially with family, however, it does take some preparation and good planning for the adventure to be successful.

My home – for a while

Despite our modern communication technology, telephone, email, facebook, twitter, which allow us to stay in touch 24/7 across continents, whenever you move to a different country, your social network will still be left behind. That might not be obvious at first glance. However, once you’re gone, you quickly realize how important having friends and family close by actually is. Suddenly you can’t quickly call over a friend to help with assembling that new cupboard, your sister is not available to look after the children for an hour, and there is no more girls’ night at home with a movie and pizza.

The perfect employer – what makes a company attractive to candidates?

This question is becoming more and more important. Qualified personnel are rare and much sought after. Often potential candidates have the choice between several job offers, or are simply not actively looking for a change – hence, they need to be convinced of the advantages of a new job. Here it’s not only the job description, responsibility and salary that are important. The attractiveness of the company must not be underestimated as a factor.

HR-Recruiting international: A day in Moscow

I went to Moscow to one of our clients. For anyone who does not know Moscow and would like a comparison with other big cities – it simply does not compare. The immense number of 11.5 million people live in the city. With that many trying to get around, several hours for 35 kilometers isn’t that unusual. The trouble started even before I got on the plane. To get a visa for a business trip, you need a specific invitation from a Russian company. Thankfully, there are agencies who help with that kind of paper work. Alright, I got my visa within a week, I was ready to go.

Meet our consultants – Rüdiger Werner

Usually, I start out the day with online research, and later work through the correspondence with customers and candidates. Phone calls with candidates usually happen in the evening, though. I regularly have appointments with customers and job interviews with candidates out of the office. Every single project has its own difficulties. One that proved difficult was a Development Engineer for power-train control modules. The challenge here lay in the complex requirement profile. Currently, I am working on a project for Russia. A customer is looking for a General Manager for their Moskow branch.

China – still an interesting place full of potential

What awaits someone who takes the plunge and goes to live and work in a foreign world for a few years? There will be the great new job of course, a new company, new colleagues and responsibilities, a different workflow and a ton of opportunities. Sometimes these elements are more pronounced, sometimes less, but they are always part of switching companies. If you are moving internationally, other things are added to that list: a new language, and unfamiliar culture, the inevitable red tape. All these are issue that the candidates usually know of and take into account – even look forward to.

A job in Switzerland – and what goes along with it

A high quality of living, attractive salaries as well as low taxes and social security contributions – these are the assets that make Switzerland internationally competitive. It is no wonder that thousands of people enter the country every year. If you were successful in finding a job, only half of the work is done. For most people, a change of job also means to move flats; which means that dozens of big and small decisions have to be made. Every person starting a career in a new country is also a consumer.
